Telewest is to shed 170 jobs in its bid to rationalise its call centre operation in the UK.

Staff were told of the job cuts late yesterday but it's taken until lunchtime today to get a response from the cableco.

As part of the reorganisation two call centres will shut bringing the total number of call centres in the UK to seven.

It's not known if any more centres will be cut in the future.

Telewest said it will update its call centres in Dudley and Sheffield while creating a national centre for consumer credit services in Birmingham.

All the changes should be complete by the Autumn.

In a statement the cableco said: "These changes in our contact centres and credit services could result in net job savings of around 170 (that's job losses to you and I), however our objective is to redeploy many people either to jobs at the new centres or in other departments at their local Telewest site." ®
