Intel Roadmap Further choice items from Intel's latest desktop and mobile processor roadmaps have leaked out - including the 2GHz Pentium 4's launch price-point: $562.

Much of the information is well known - it essentially follows the roadmap Intel set out earlier this year (see Chipzilla gears up for 2GHz-plus PCs and Chipzilla readies 1GHz Mobile PIII). However, the latest leak, handily typed up by Web site Digit Life, extends the picture out into Q2 2002. And we can add some extra information from our own sources, primarily in the notebook processor space.

On the desktop, Tualatin, the 0.13 micron Pentium III die-shrink, will ship to OEMs in June for July system shipments. The 1.13GHz Tualatin will replace the upcoming 1.13GHz Coppermine, which will now not be released. Gone too is the 1.3GHz P4.

On the P4 side, Intel will move to a Socket 478 version of the 850 chipset as it releases the 478-pin P4 to support all those upcoming non-RDRAM chipsets (see RDRAM-to-DDR P4 transition? No problemo - Intel) and Intel's own SDRAM-based P4 chipset, Brookdale, officially called the i845.

The 2GHz P4 will launch next quarter at $562.

As expected from the previous roadmap, the DDR version of Brookdale won't ship until Q1 2002. Later in the following quarter, Intel will ship Brookdale G, integrating a graphics core into the chipset.

Mid-2002 will also see the arrival of the Tulloch chipset, the RDRAM-based successor to the 850. We hear it will support Socket 478, 533MHz system bus and dual 1066 RDRAM channels.

The latest roadmap reiterates the shift of Tualatin down into the low-end under the Celeron brand, supported by the 815G/EG and 810E/E2 chipsets in Q1 2002.

On the mobile front, Intel will release a Low Voltage (LV) Mobile PIII at 750MHz by the end of this month. It's based on Coppermine; the Tualatin version, at 800MHz, will ship late Q3, and higher in Q1 2002. The Coppermine LV Mobile Celeron will ship at 600MHz this month before being replaced by the Tualatin version at over 600MHz in Q1 next year.

The LV Mobile PIII and Celeron are aimed at what Intel calls mini-notebooks. Sub-notebooks are targeted with its Ultra-low Voltage (ULV) parts. Coppermine ULV PIIIs and Celerons should hit 600MHz real soon, before being replaced with 700MHz Tualatins late Q3 (for the PIII) and 600MHz+ Tualatins in Q1 2002 (for the Celeron). The first quarter of next year will also see ULV Tualatins at over 700MHz.

In the full-size notebook sector, Intel now appears to be squeezing out the 133MHz frontside bus-supporting Coppermine-T modification in favour of Tualatin-based parts. So while our original roadmap had Tualatin Mobile PIIIs coming in July at 1.06GHz and 1.13GHz, Digit Life's data suggests 1GHz, 933MHz and 866MHz Tualatins will ship too, all previously expected to be 0.18 micron Coppermine-T parts.

Intel will transition to the 830M chipset throughout the rest of the year. Brookdale M will arrive mid to late Q1 2002 to support the first Mobile P4, based on Northwood. ®
