BT has suspended the services available from its Web site after an upgrade to its site went horribly wrong.

Details are still sketchy but an upgrade to BT's site, which sources suggest involved improving security measures for access to customer phone bills online, had exactly the opposite effect.

A number of Register readers have written to us that when they logged on to access their own bills they were able to see other people's bills online.

BT technicians are working to identify the source of the problem with the site, which at this time remains unclear.

Anyone trying to access the site receives the following unhelpful message: "We are currently upgrading this site. Full service will be restored shortly."

A BT spokeswoman confirmed that there was a problem with the site but was not able to say whether services had been suspended because of security problems or for some other reason. ®
