Intel tackles chipset rivals on price

Intel looks set to join the price war started by rival integrated chipset makers VIA and SIS when its 815G and 815EG Celeron-oriented chipsets enter volume production next quarter.

Both chipsets will sell to mobo makers for under $30 a pop - pretty much what their getting the older 810 family of chipsets for.

With the 810 accounting for around 80 per cent of the OEM market, according to Web site DigiTimes, it's not hard to see that Intel is pricing the new parts to encourage mobo designers to make the move from 810 to 815.

It also suggests that Intel is concerned about sales going to rival offerings. The 815G and 815EG add support for a 133MHz frontside bus, but that's clearly not enough to persuade OEMs to pay a premium for it. And perhaps Intel isn't quite so dismissive of the low end as many observers have reckoned.

The 815G and the 815EG are priced at $26.5 and $29, respectively. Expect that to fall be below $20 later in Q3, however, we're told, thanks to VIA and SIS' pricing plans. ®
