Tech recession to bottom-out in a year – Marimba CEO

Glass half-full

The US tech panic should last no more than a year, Marimba's CEO John Olsen told us today - he reckons the underlying financial performance of the technology sector is generally healthy.

Once earnings begin to be compared to the current lows, rather than last year's highs, "it will bottom out, and the longest it can take is a year," he predicts.

Marimba has 400 enterprise customers, so it hasn't as badly burned by the dot.com implosion as many others, and has some inkling of what IT's big spenders are planning (although Olsen admits he has no idea what demand will look like in the second half of the year.)

Marimba should be a little more recession-proof than most - orientating itself around selling systems management software. Having shaken off the Push tag once and for all, the company is looking to phase out its Castanet brand altogether, and expand outside the United States, which accounts for 95 per cent of its sales now. It's also launching a service monitoring suite. ®
