Updated As expected, AMD has used the beginning of the CeBit trade show in Germany to introduce versions of its desktop Athlon microprocessor at clock speeds of 1.3 and 1.33GHz.

But, and thanks to our friends at tecChannel for this, it is also demoing a 1.5GHz Palamino machine as well as a dual Athlon system at the humungous and often freezing cold fairground in Hangover.

According to the story, the single processor machine will sample next quarter. The dual processor machine is a VA Linux demo system running two chips at 900MHz, while AMD has its own machine running two chips at 1200MHz, we learn. Dual samples are shipping now, the story adds.

There are high-res pictures of the 1.5GHz Palamino at the tecChannel site.

The 1.3 and 1.33GHz processors that AMD introduced today are priced at $318 and $350 respectively, when 1000 are bought, are available now.

The 1.33GHz processor has a 266MHz front side bus (FSB) while the 1.3GHz Athlon has a 200MHz FSB. Neither, as we reported earlier this week, uses the "Palomino" core.

In a press statement, the firm said that the double data rate (DDR) platform would provide a firm memory platform for the processor, and also announced that Compaq, Maxdata and Micron had produced PCs based on the chips.

Many hardware sites have reviews and benchmarks of the latest microprocessors - you can see our hardware roundup on the Athlon and other stuff by pointing your divining rod here. ®

RegOid 1 AMD codenames its processors after horses because apparently you can't copyright or trademark such names. Maybe someone should point that out to Craig Barrett whose favourite horse is called Pentium.
