Comedian, writer and actor Stephen Fry launched into an attack on Microsoft and Windows on the TV programme Room 101 last week.

The programme - which takes its name from novel 1984 - invites celebrities to select the things in the modern world that they most despise and argue why they should be banished to Room 101. Stephen Fry, as ever, came up with an eclectic mix of things - including New Age gear and novelty "collectors' item" plates - but finished with Room 101 itself.

Well, programmes like Room 101 that encourage people to talk about all the things they hate in life. Stephen suggested instead we have programmes like "Room Fluffy". He was obliged by host Paul Merton, who brought out a "Room Lovely" sign and asked for things to introduce into that instead.

Mr Fry ventured Kathy Burke - "just one of those people that when you see them at a party, you go 'oh good' " - among others. However, when he got round to introducing Apple Macs - he is an acknowledged Mac lover - he slipped from his own premise and attacked PCs and Microsoft.

"PCs? Ach." [Pretends to spit on floor] "Microsoft? Horrible, horrible company. And Windows?" [spit, spit, spit]. He then returned to how wonderful and beautifully designed iMacs were.

Room 101 was indeed entered into Room 101 and the whole thing folded in upon itself and vanished from existence. The same is unlikely to happen to Microsoft. ®
