Sun is set to unleash a sub $1,000 Unix workstation using its UltraSPARC IIe chip.

The Blade 100 comes with 128MB RAM, 15GB hard drive and Solaris 8 OS. It also uses the SunPCi II coprocessor card so Windows and Solaris can run simultaneously.

The entry-level workstatin runs on the UltraSPARC IIe, a relation of the UltraSPARC II with an additional 256Kb of on-chip cache.

The machine is meant to replace the Ultra 5 and 10 workstations, and costs from $995 if bought on the Web. Offline the range costs between $1,195 and $2,995, and is available from today. In the UK prices start at £ 980. Prices exclude monitors.

Sun has vowed not to let the supply problems plaguing its Blade 1000 workstation, which uses the UltraSPARC III chip, affect shipments of the Blade 100. ®
