Hypertec's Phoenix 370/S system-upgrade board is set to launch next week at the Computer Trade Show.

It is cheaper than replacing a whole PC base unit, but more expensive than simply replacing the motherboard. However, it upgrades the processor, the video, sound and graphics capabilities of any machine.

It doesn't need to be configured, and creates a single install base with uniform admin settings. So Hypertec reckons that companies looking to upgrade a large number of machines will be enticed by the convenience factor.

The Phoenix card is built on a three quarter ISA footprint, but only uses the ISA slot as an anchor. According to Simon Smart, technical director at Hypertec, the card essentially makes the motherboard obsolete.

"It is based on proven technology: Intel processors and FIS chipsets for example. As long as there is enough space in a PC for the card, and the PC has AT or ATX power supply connections, the card will work in any machine," he said.
