ATI ships Radeon Mobility
Power throttling tech cuts consumption to 0.5W

ATI has begun shipping is Radeon Mobility notebook-oriented graphics chip, following the part's launch last November.
Back then, ATI was pretty tight-lipped about what the new chip would actually offer, except in broad terms. It turns out that the company has focused tightly on power consumption, figuring the chip's Radeon core is sufficiently competitive in a market being eagerly targeted by its new arch-rival, Nvidia.
Radeon Mobility powers down on-die components that aren't in use, such as the 3D engine, allowing the chip to draw under 0.5W when it's doing basic 2D work. The core and memory clock speed - there's 8MB on-chip frame buffer RAM - can be run between 66MHz and 200MHz, according to need. The core voltage can be scaled back too.
ATI is bundling a further 8MB to 64MB of DDR SDRAM with the part's multi-chip daughtercard module. ®
