AMD ups ante with 850MHz Duron

No truce in bloody chip wars

In the endless game of tit-for-tat between AMD and Intel, the former company will intro a Duron tomorrow at 850MHz, which is set to again lower prices on entry level machines.

The Duron will cost $149, according to Tech Web today, although it is listed on Pricewatch at $107, according to other sources. Whatever, that will mean cuts in some other of AMD's processors.

Last week, Intel introduced its long-awaited Celeron 800MHz with a 100MHz front side bus, but it seems that the price-cutting between the two firms will proceed at an even more accelerated pace this year than last.

Durons, like their big brothers, the Athlon processors, cost less than Celerons, and low AMD prices are forcing Intel to take a different tack on its own chip line up.

Last week, it launched a 1.3GHz Pentium 4, but in the next weeks Intel will make aggressive moves on its 1GHz Pentium III processors, and as the pace of price cutting seems to be getting faster, there's no knowing where this will all lead.

Except in cheaper prices for consumers, that is. ®
