Microsoft is making substantial progress in the field of security, Giga Information Group reports, and has achieved a 30 per cent improvement in productivity in the last 12 months. That's production of security patches, unfortunately.

According to Giga the two most recent security patches issued for Windows Media Player bring the running total for this year up to 93, whereas in 1999 Microsoft 'only' released 62 security patches.

Most of the security holes are minor, of course - otherwise none of us would have any vital data left - but although it's a tough one, it's still just about possible for Microsoft to break the 100 by New Year's Eve.

Giga, which surely can't have released this one on the same day as Microsoft's Safenet 2000 conference by accident, comments: "The trend in security breaches, particularly with respect to any software package carrying the popular Microsoft brand name, is clearly up." ®
