Intel is prepping a new toy for music gadget freaks at next month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The chip giant will show off a portable digital-audio player amid a range of other goodies, according to a report on CNET which cites sources close to the company. Details on the player are sketchy, but Intel will likely gain two advantages via the product.

First, it will be able to expand its brand name into yet another area, and second it will be in a good position to undercut rivals in the digital-audio field by supplying some of the components needed. Intel is the biggest maker of flash memory - which is used to store data in digital-audio players. It also flogs the chips needed for USBs.

Now all Intel has to do is convince the world's youth that it's trendy enough to plaster its name all over the device. ®
