Hardware manufacturer Tadpole has added what it described as "on-board" video to its range of portable Unix servers.

The availability of what amounts to a graphics card gives Tadpole's VoyagerIIi, a phone book sized 10lb Solaris server featuring the UltraSPARC II chip, the video features found in standard, bulkier Sun servers.

With the upgrade the VoyagerIIi will have increase PCI connectivity, integrated audio/graphics and disc capacity enhancements.

The video capabilities will allow the PCI slot to be used for dual resolution video output, or increased Ethernet connectivity.

A fully speced VoyagerIIi now features 444MHz UltraSPARC IIi processors, 1GB of RAM and disc capacity of 100 GB.

According to Tadpole, the upgrade will allow the servers to be used in markets where dual screen monitors are needed - such as the oil industries, in training and financial trading rooms.

Una Richens, vice president of sales and marketing at Tadpole, said the server is particularly attractive to those users who need to be able to perform data analysis whilst they are on the move - thought presumably users will not want to carry around two screens whilst they are on the road.

Tadpole's customers for the server include the US Air Force and Marines as well as IT manufacturers such as Nortel, Lucent and BMC Software. ®
