Redstone Telecom is "confident" that it will be able to supply xDSL services via 1250 of BT's local exchanges by July 2001.

Unlike other operators that need to locate their equipment within BT's local exchanges, Redstone has taken an "external location" approach to local loop unbundling (LLU).

This means it is looking to locate its equipment in cabinets outside BT exchanges, instead of fighting for space inside BT's buildings.

Redstone says its approach has already been given the go-ahead by BT and the winged watchdog, Oftel.

A rather smug Graham Cove, CE of Redstone, said in a statement: "Our external location strategy means our DSL rollout can be achieved at a fifth of the cost of those operators who are looking to co-locate internally.

"This development means we also have much more control over our network rollout and save time," he said. ®
