Intel cranks up mobile CPU to 1GHz

Intel is working up a release of a 1GHz mobile CPU in the first half of next year, or in other words, sometime in the next seven months.
And in a technology demo at Comdex, the company is signalling it's unwillingness to give any quarter to Transmeta. The product on show is an IBM sub-notebook using an Intel 500MHz chip and running (using some power management feature, we guess, as it's not a Transmeta CPU) at less than half a watt.
Presumably, this is the IBM Transmeta notebook MKII - the version sans Transmeta, that is (see Intel claimed to have squeezed IBM to dump Transmeta).
The 1GHz beast is, Intel reckons, about as fast as a laptop can go without sacrificing portability or battery life. The chip will have a power consumption of under two watts.
Currently, the company's fastest mobile CPU is the 850MHz PIII. Launched on 25 September, this year, the chip carries a hefty OEM price tag of $722. ®
