Nazi auctions, the French, the Law and some blinkered people

Whoever told you people were rational?

Yahoo! legally obliged to ban the French?

Your recent piece on the issue of Yahoo and Nazi auctions is spot on. At jewish.co.uk, we ran a piece over the summer over this issue.

The URL is: http://www.jewish.co.uk/editorial3.php3

Feel free to have a look and link to us if you feel it is relevant. The more people realise it is not a question of free speech but of decency and respect for others, the sooner Yahoo will realise that making money out of death is not something it should be associated with. If yahoo does continues with this, how low and further will they go?

Other large publishers would not do this, so why yahoo?

Regards

Webmaster

The simplest solution would be to disconnect France from the Internet. Let them go back to their own French network (minitel?).

Greg

Good. Now if we could just get France to ban e-mail to the USA, I could reduce my incoming relayed spam by 30 percent all in one blow. Is there some reason why French sysadmins who can read an English-language UNIX manual can't figure out how to get and deploy free updates to Sendmail?

Rich Tietjens

This is a good article up until you decided to add the Anti-American sentiment. I lived in Europe for five years and can understand where the animosity comes from. You seem to shoot from the hip, very American. All I can say is that keep up the good work and I am glad I am reading "your" article in English and not in German. (WWII)

I've always thought that this law was put into place so the French wouldn't be reminded that they were pretty much all Nazi sympathisers anyway.

English to French translation:
Resistance --> Vichy

I think you're missing the point entirely. France has no jurisdiction of any sort over Yahoo servers based outside of France. If France doesn't like their citizens looking at Nazi memorabilia on Yahoo servers based outside of France, their only option is to watch all traffic inbound to France and discard packets coming from those servers. Yahoo is under no legal, ethical, or moral obligation to do anything whatsoever to help the government of France censor what its citizens look at, nor is Yahoo under any type of obligation to France to refuse to accept orders for such stuff or to refuse to ship it to a French address.

If I were Yahoo, I'd tell the French government to piss off.

Robert Bruce Thompson

Ah the bloody French; the culture neurotics from whom all that is good springs. Sounds like a personal problem to me.

The answer is simple. French sites, if their government chooses, should be prohibited from carrying Nazi memorabilia and John Wayne movies. Chinese sites should be prohibited from carrying Mao toilet paper, Iranian sites from carrying Ayatollah dartboards. Get the point?
Here's a better question - if Yahoo banned the French, would they be missed?

Terry M. Lewis

So, what you are saying is you are glad Yahoo-- a private company-- is under fire because the US governnment is in the dark ages in regards to Cuba? That's brilliant.

Blake Harris

After years and years of the US telling everyone else in the world where they can go and what they can do (e.g. with reference to Cuba), it's good to see that the great America is being told what it has to do in other people's countries.

Gee. The U.S. is the only country that ever tried to do this... OH WAIT, that Ghandi guy...what was he going on about...something about some country that was all up in India's business...what country was that...?

Hmm the Irish are obviously pissed at someone for mucking about in their affairs...I heard it was the French, but that doesn't seem right somehow.

You sir, are obviously just asking for flamebait.

Ed Whittman

The only thing wrong with the French is, they can't get over the fact that the Nazis kicked their ass and then half the French joined them. Come on frenchie give it a rest. Half the damn atrocities committed in France were committed by one French citizen on another one. And they still can't come to grips with

that. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. It is called realism.

First off, let me apologize for the arrogance of my government - it is a constant embarrassment to many of us.

However...

I didn't think I ever see any of our cherished British friends side with the French! Lightning should strike!!! ;-)

Perhaps the Frog buggerers are looking for souvenirs of their daddy's.

I think I'll go pop open a Newcastle brown ale.

Cheers,

Unless my memory's playing tricks (and hey, I'm not getting any younger) Amazon did the same thing when Kitty Kelley's book about the royal family came out. Although it was freely available there was big notice banning sales to the UK.

Of course, there was nothing to have stopped me buying the book and having it sent to friends in France. That is, if I'd been interested in reading about the lazy, in-bred, half-witted spongers in the first place.
