ALI joins VIA in race to support P4

And DDR memory, natch

ALI is ramping up an Athlon and Duron chipset supporting 266MHz DDR SDRAM ahead of an expected announcement from AMD on the subject next week.
The chipset is set to enter production in November.

ALI hopes to have chipsets supporting both the AMD Athlon and Intel's upcoming Pentium 4. It is negotiating with Intel for a license to its Pentium 4 bus, which it hopes to have in time for products that could roll early next year.

Last week, VIA announced similar plans to support DDR for both Athlon and Pentium 4 processors (see VIA plans DDR PIII, Athlon support).

Intel initially planned to only support Rambus with the Pentium 4 but will now also support SDRAM in a chip set due sometime next year. Intel has not officially said whether it will support DDR (but it will).

As Intel races to develop the DDR chipset for P4, ALI reckons it could double its chip set sales next year.

All ALI needs to do now is grab a license to the Pentium 4 bus from Chipzilla. Last week, VIA confidently predicted that this wouldn't be a problem. ®
