Dell has hacked the price of its servers, PCs and notebooks to pieces, citing cheaper component prices.

The Texan vendor cut prices of Dimension desktops by 15 per cent, Inspiron notebooks for small businesses by 12 per cent and PowerEdge servers by up to 47 per cent. Punters can now pick up Dimensions for $599, Inspirons for $1,099 and the servers for $1,199.

"As Dell takes delivery of lower-priced components, we can immediately pass those savings on to our customers," said Frank Muehleman, VP and general manager of Dell home and small business group.

The biggest price cuts affect the PowerEdge 6400 and 6450 servers - which saw reductions of 47 per cent and 43 per cent respectively. These monsters, which hold four PIII 700MHz chips, now weigh in at $15,341 and $18.042 respectively.

This month both HP and Sun have announced new super-server additions to their product ranges. ®
