Barclays today beat Egg to become Britain's most visited online bank.

According to research by MMXI Europe, 641,000 punters logged on to Barclays.co.uk in August, up on July's 460,000, making Barclays the top financial site for the first time this year.

Lloyd's TSB hung onto second place with 583,000 visitors. While Egg, the Prudential's online bank offering, saw its number of visitors fall by 20,000 from the previous month, causing it to slide into third place for August with 582,000 visitors.

Others making it into MMXI's top five UK Business and Finance sites were Nationwide, with 316,000 visitors, and Barclaycard with 300,000.

MMXI reckons 3.4 million Brits regularly use Internet banks - making the category more popular than news, travel and sports sites. And all this despite widely publicised security fears over Net banking.

Back in July, Barclays was forced to shut down its Internet banking operation following a security cock-up. ®
