AMD's monster 1.1GHz chip will be available from 28 August and the first British system builders have released their pricing.

Evesham.com plans to launch six versions of its Origin 1100 1.1GHz PC models. They will range from £1249 ex VAT - with 128MB SDRAM, 15GB hard drive and 17in monitor, to £1999 ex VAT - 256Mb, 40GB, 19in monitor and CD-RW drive.

London-based Mesh Computers also said it would have a model on offer from the start of next month. The Matrix 1.1GHz GT Pro will cost £1999 ex VAT. It will come with 256MB SDRAM, 60GB hard drive, CD-RW, 19in monitor and 16x speed DVD ROM.

Both companies said take-up of 1GHz Athlon systems had been better than expected, despite a slow start to sales. Each had flogged around 200 machines since AMD launched the chip in March.

Time Computers will also launch a 1.1GHz machine, but said today it was too early to give details of spec or price.

The target market for these systems will be high-speed gamers, graphic designers or multimedia users, or simply customers with more money than sense. ®
