CIX kicks its own butt

Ditches Toll Free service

CIX - the ISP that attracts a certain "calibre" of net user - has ditched its toll-free Net access service a little more than a month after it was introduced.

The move is an embarrassment to CIX which, when it launched the product last month, boasted that "unlike newcomers to the Internet market, CIX cannot afford to provide a sub-standard service".

How those words have come back to haunt CIX.

According to one CIX user, the service has been plagued with problems with people being unable to connect to the service and dialler boxes being programmed incorrectly.

There are also unconfirmed reports that people just "abused" the system running up higher costs than CIX expected.

No one at CIX's Surrey HQ was available to comment on this when The Register called today, but it does seem odd that CIX would pull a product a month after launch unless something was not quite right.

The CIX Toll Free service was launched on Monday 3 July but at the weekend, CIX informed users that the service would be ditched next Tuesday.

Earlier this year CIX altered its Ts&Cs and caused an outrage among CIX users. Shortly after this ugly episode, Graham Davies, the former sales and marketing director at CIX, replaced Doug Birtley as MD, who left the company to "run other business interests". ®
