Microsoft has released the beta version of Small Business Server 2000 to its resellers worldwide.

The latest version of this BackOffice software is aimed at small to medium businesses with a maximum of 50 PCs.

It is based on the Windows 2000 OS - which upgrades the NT Server 4.0 operating system used in the existing Small Business Server 4.5 software.

SQL Server 2000 replaces version 7.0 - so the previous 10GB total database restriction has gone, and there is now no database limit. And Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 replace Proxy Server 2.0.

Microsoft said the full product is scheduled to release to manufacturing "sometime in the third quarter of 2000". No pricing has been released. Customers who bought Small Business Server 4.5 before January 1 will get a free upgrade to the 2000 version, the company said.

A full table of changes between version 4.5 and 2000 can be found here. ®
