VIA Technologies is to support the ATA-100 hard disk drive interface in its new South Bridge chipsets.

The ATA-100 open standard, developed by Quantum, increases the burst data transfer rate of hard drives to a maximum 100MB per second. VIA, Intel and other disk manufacturers support the new, with ATA-100 products and systems expected to start shipping by the end of Q3.

"VIA was first to market with chipset support for the ATA-33 and ATA-66 disk drive interface standards, and we are proud to continue as a technology driver with support for Quantum's new ATA-100 standard," said Wen Chi Chen, president and CEO of VIA Technologies. ®
