British OSP, LineOne, has teamed up with discount telco Quip to offer toll-free access to the Net for its 700,000 users. The catch is that LineOne users have to sign-up for Quip and use its service to get free of-peak calls to the Net.

Users who spend £5 a month with Quip -- which offers 20 per cent discount on national and long distance calls -- will receive 500 minutes (eight hours) toll-free off-peak access to the Net. Those who spend £10 a month get 1,000 minutes -- more than 16 hours a month of off-peak access for free. LineOne has been trialing the service with its users since December 1999.

Ajay Chowdhury, LineOne's MD, said the number of people who have signed up for the service is "in the thousands". LineOne is not the only Net access provider to sign up with a telco to offer limited toll-free access to the Net.

Screaming.net, GreatXscape and Freeserve all offer initiatives linked to telco usage. ®
