MS tops UK online ad spend table

A large slice of a smallish pie, it would seem...

Microsoft is spending more on online advertising in the UK than any other business, according to a study by Internet AdWatch and Fletcher Research. Not that the sums involved are vast. In June (the latest figures available, apparently), Microsoft spent 141,000 pounds, pipping IBM's 124,000 pounds. Intel was a more distant third, with a spend of just 74,000 pounds - but we doubt whether pushing the Intel brand name today to the punters gives any significant increase in sales. Media groups like Bertelsmann (4th) and Pearson (6th) are also quite big spenders, along with BT (5th). HP spent 55,000 pounds to capture the 8th spot. Next was Amazon, spending 52,000 pounds. In tenth place was the first non-IT industry advertiser: BMW, weighing in at 48,000 pounds - not a sum that would buy many of its motor cars. ®
