Gust catches Amazon's skirt, reveals glimpse of 'Netflix for books'

All-you-can-read deal for $9.99 a month

Amazon appears to be preparing an all-you-can-read literary buffet, giving readers unlimited access to ebooks and audiobooks for $9.99 a month.

A webpage temporarily viewable on the Amazon US site dubbed the service Kindle Unlimited. A copy of it was cached by Google and shared on Hacker News.

According to the disclosed web document, Kindle Unlimited will automatically bill your credit card linked to your Amazon account until disabled.

The page advertises "over 600,000" ebook and audiobook titles including the Hunger Games series and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Such a service would mark a departure from the usual à la carte pricing model Amazon and other ebook retailers use. Traditionally, readers who want to purchase an ebook, buy digital tomes individually as they would from a conventional bookseller.

The subscription model, however, would function more like video services such as Netflix and Hulu, which charge monthly flat fees for unlimited streaming of TV shows and movies.

Amazon did not respond to a request for comment nor suggest a possible release date on the service. It is unclear whether the Kindle Unlimited would be limited to the company's own Kindle devices or accessible on desktop and notebook platforms as well.

In the meantime, we recommend you visit the local library for your – oh, no wait, it's been closed. OK, back to the internet of cat things. ®
