So you reckon you're a leet infosec warrior. Now you can prove it, pal

There's a job in it for you, if you're that good

Defend Blighty from malware, show online crooks who's boss, bank a pay cheque, and sip a martini. It's not quite James Bond, but if you reckon you're up to the job, good news:

Cyber Security Challenge UK launches today, on Friday, and is supposed to give Brits a chance to prove their computer security skills. Developed by Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA), the contest involves online and face-to-face battles of e-wit.

Now it their fifth year, the games will begin with a competition called Assignment: Opening Lines, in which wannabe digital warriors will fight against a fictitious enemy called The Flag Day Associates.

"The 5th Cyber Security Challenge will be the first time we have brought all our activities and competitions under a single scenario that will evolve with twists and turns over the coming year," said challenge boss Stephanie Daman.

"By creating a mischievous, and above all realistic, nemesis to defend against, the 5th Cyber Security Challenge will be the most eventful and action packed so far, and will help to really excite, inspire and grow our candidate community."

Players will be told about a made-up attack on the UK's computer networks, and asked to provide analysis and report back to officers at the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit.

The National Crime Agency’s Adam Kramer, who dreamt up the challenge, said:

"The aim of the Opening Lines is to test the skills required to investigate cyber crime and the individuals or groups responsible for it. Whether it’s the creation and spread of malicious software, or attempting to steal banking details, those charged with investigating cyber crime need to have the technical ability, knowledge and understanding to defend the UK and its citizens from cyber related attacks.

”Following on from the success of the 2013/14 Masterclass, we hope that the new challenges will test those who may want to pursue careers in cyber crime investigations and we look forward to supporting the Cyber Security Challenge over the coming months."

Finish top of the game and you will qualify for the face-to-face battles. Battle through these and the winners will square up against the Flag Day Associates themselves. Beating them may even land you a job.
