Amazon's desktops-in-the-cloud 'Workspaces' switched on in Europe

Virtual PCs without a trans-Atlantic schlep

Amazon Web Services (AWS) “Workspaces” desktop-as-a-service offering was launched last November with a big caveat: the service would be lousy outside of the US.

AWS therefore declined to offer The Reg a review, a decision we later discovered was entirely justifiable because the service was scarcely usable on a trans-pacific link.

We subsequently put the service through its paces properly and found it very promising.

Readers in Europe now have the chance to make that assessment for themselves, because AWS has thrown the switch for Workspaces in its EU (Ireland) Region. That should make for a rather nicer experience now that trans-Atlantic latency won't stand between you and your virtual desktop.

Flicking the switch on European workspaces isn't AWS' only news for the day: the cloud colossus has also added enhanced controls for the S3 storage service and Route 53 in a new release of its mobile app. ®
