San Francisco says yes to GIANT Apple flagship store, public plaza

More iconic than a NY glass cube... apparently

Apple has received final planning permission for its new flagship store at Union Square, San Francisco.

The San Francisco Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors gave the new shop their approval after protracted negotiations.

The two-storey store's design includes 23-foot glass sliding doors and an open "public plaza" behind the store where free Wi-Fi will be available.

“We are thrilled that the city of San Francisco has given its final approval to begin work on our new store and public plaza, which will make a wonderful addition to Union Square and create hundreds of local jobs,” said Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessett.

“Our Stockton Street store has been incredibly popular, welcoming over 13 million customers since it opened nine years ago, and we look forward to making a new home on Union Square.”

Apple has previously said the new shop would be "more iconic" than its glass cube in New York City.

Its latest iStore will sit on Union Square and is about 45 per cent bigger than its older shop in the city, sitting at about 24,819ft2 in size – around the same size as its the Fifth Ave retail quarters. It will employ some 400 people. ®
