Toshiba new HG6 range REVEALS slimmest SSD module you can buy

Tosh refreshes fifth-generation SSD line-up

Toshiba has refreshed its HG5d 2.5-inch SSD with the sixth generation HG6 range, expanding its form factors to include the thinnest SSD module available – at just 2.3mm.

Toshiba next-generation high-performance client solid state HG6 series in multiple form factors...

The HG6 range, which has received THNSN and THNSF product names – Toshiba’s product naming is not driven by needing to appeal to end users – uses 19NM toggle-mode 2.0 NAND and its sequential read and write performance is 534MB/sec and 482MB/sec respectively. The random read and write IOPS numbers are not available.

As with the HG5, the HG6 range (PDF) comes in 60, 128, 256 and 512GB capacities and has a 6Gbit/s SATA interface and a 1.65 million hours mean time to failure rating. The form factors are 2.5-inch SATA (7mm/9.5mm heights), mSATA and M.2.

Toshiba says the 19nm NAND is the "latest NAND technology for longest availability and greater price flexibility".

The mSATA format 512GB product provides high capacity in a small form factor. The M.2-2280 128/256GB single-sided product is currently the thinnest SSD module available, at just 2.3mm. Both of these are good for space-constrained devices.

The products have a self-encrypting drive option with Trusted Computing Group Opal 2.0 compliance, and Toshiba’s Wipe technology to automatically invalidate sensitive data on the drive in the event of an unauthorised access.

Toshiba says the HG6 SSD is optimised for notebook PCs, workstations, thin clients, server boot drives, and read-intensive enterprise applications. ®
