Nato, UN, NGOs slug it out with namespace biz bods: IMHO... STFU

ICA gripes about demands for protection of acronyms

A muddy battle over the protection of the acronyms of government bodies and NGOs in domain names has begun... in classic acronym-heavy style.

The Internet Commerce Association (ICA) – the nearest thing the investor community has to a domain trade lobby group – is concerned that the likes of NATO and UN agencies such as Interpol and WIPO are being over-sensitive about a recently adopted resolution to safeguard exact matches of their full names at the top and second level of the DNS.

Those organisations are slugging it out with the Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO) council, after it unanimously agreed to stop short of granting what the ICA characterised as "undue protections to acronyms of their names".

The ICA said it had welcomed the move as it "did not put existing acronyms at incumbent gTLDs at unreasonable risk."

The group is now bellyaching about the various gov agencies and NGOs that have moaned about the resolution on the apparent grounds that it doesn't offer comprehensive enough protection.

ICA has now written a letter to the GNSO Council saying that the ICA, if no one else, supports the decision.

The group said that the ICANN board needed to wade in to what it claimed has become "a politically charged hot potato".

The ICA said that the "undue protection" demanded by UN bodies and other organisations could "undermine the rights of registrants at incumbent gTLDs." ®
