Sony brags: We've hit over 2 MEELLION PS4 console 'sales' worldwide

Proud-as-Punch PlayStation purveyor Sony has cheerfully revealed it has sold more than two million PS4s around the globe.

The new-generation console went on sale in the States and Canada on 15 November, and in Europe and Australasia this past Friday. The first 24 hours saw “more than one million gamers” pick up one of the machines, Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, claimed.

And now “more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold”, he added.

The words used imply Sony is discussing over-the-counter sales rather than shipments from its factories and warehouses into the retail channel, but House’s statement did not say so explicitly.

In what is perhaps a tacit admission that its console isn’t finished product, House promised Sony will bring “new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead” and the device “will continue to evolve”.

Rival Microsoft released its next-gen hardware, the Xbox One, on 21 November. It too claimed first-day sales of more than a million units, though the One debuted in rather more countries than the PS4 did: 13 as opposed to two. ®
