VMware releases hypervisor INCEPTION tool

How deep can you go with nested ESXi?

VMWare has released something to get your head spinning: a tool to better manage nested hypervisors.

Virtzilla knows about nesting its ESXi hypervisor and says it is possible to do so inside its Fusion, Workstation and vSphere products, but also makes it plain that attempting to do so in a production environment is not just dangerous but well and truly beyond its support obligations if you use it for any real work.

Users, however, seem quite keen on the idea. A nested virtualisation forum is quite lively and the thread on running ESXi inside Hyper-V offers some interesting insights into the worlds of some rather adventurous sysadmins.

That enthusiasm may well be behind VMware's decision to release a new VMware Tools for Nested ESXi package that makes it possible to put Virtzilla's kitbag of useful VM utilities to work within a nested hypervisor.

The new package is what VMware calls a “Fling” whipped up by its developers but not intended for production use. If you'd like to give it a whirl, you can find it here. ®
