Chinese students put feet up after intensive rack-thrashing session

Team China confident on final day of student cluster romp

HPC blog The last day of the ISC’13 Student Cluster Challenge found both of the Chinese teams feeling confident.

We checked in with Team Huazhong and Team Tsinghua just a few hours before the awards ceremony to see how they felt about the competition and their prospects for victory.

Team Tsinghua, winner of the Overall Champion trophy at ISC’12, was defending a winning streak that stretched back over three competitions and 18 months.

In this short video we find that I still don’t know how to pronounce “Tsinghua” correctly.

We also learned that, like the other teams, they had some problems with WRF. However, Tsinghua was one of only three teams to turn in a result for all of the scientific apps in this competition.

The Huazhong team we see in this video is quite a bit different than the team we’ve seen before. They don’t tell us much more (due to the language barrier, I think) than in our previous video, but they’re much more relaxed and playful now.

Our last video with them was cut a little short when the Huazhong coach approached and obviously wanted them to get back to work. It was a good coaching move; why waste time with me when they could be pushing to get better times on their last run?

This dedication paid off. Huazhong won the LINPACK award and was one of the three teams to complete every scientific application. ®
