John McAfee 'captured'

Blog post reports failed border crossing

Fugitive anti-viral figurehead John McAfee has reportedly been captured while trying to cross the border from Belize to Mexico.

“We have received an unconfirmed report that John McAfee has been captured at the border of Belize and Mexico,” states a blog post dated December 1st.

McAfee has been on the run since being linked to a murder in Belize, where he resides.

The post is unusual inasmuch as it is written in the first person plural and does not disclose who the “We” is. Previous posts at whoismcafee.com have all been in the first person singular, or slip into the first person plural when discussing McAfee's friends and support team. All appear to be written by McAfee himself, or designed to sound as if he penned the posts.

The post prior to the report of capture details the suspicious death of one of McAfee's dogs an event he says means “I am not ashamed to admit that I am writing this in tears.”

That's typical of the blog's previous output. Just who wrote the report of McAfee's capture is not clear.

Nor is it known just where on the Belize/Mexico border McAfee was apprehended. A few minutes spent examining the border on Google Maps and Bing Maps leads us to assert the dividing line between the two nations follows the river Azul for much of its distance, but there appears to be only two bridges at which a crossing is possible.

There are also many places inland where, with assistance and a small boat, it does not look like an enormous chore requiring study of Bear Grylls' oeuvre to cross into Mexico and then reach one of the several towns close to the border.

It seems unlikely that a fugitive would risk the formal road crossing, given the tiresome need to chat to officials and hand over one's papers.

The Reg has no way of knowing where McAfee tried to make his crossing, but can't help but imagine tales of “McAfee vs. Wild may yet emerge as this saga unfolds. ®
