Apple screen maker preps 'retina' iPad Mini panel, pants reporter

Or maybe, just maybe a 5.2in iPhone 6

Chinese-language website Do News has claimed that screen maker AUO is even now working on a “retina” display for the next-generation iPad Mini. But the site does itself no favours by alleging the panel will have a pixel density of a massive, unprecedented 497ppi.

Now if Apple really is planning to up the Mini’s display resolution to 2048 x 1536 - as it no doubt will just as soon as it’s able - and it’s hoping to do so with the Mini's 7.9in screen, that’s a pixel density of 326ppi.

True, that's rather better than the 9.7in iPad's 263ppi, but it's still some way off the colossal 497ppi Do talks about.

Unless, perhaps, Apple is planning a 5.2in Mini...

Or maybe... it’s not... a Mini... maybe it’s... a bigger iPhone... with an iPad-resolution display... OMG... OMFG!!!

That’s El Reg messing with your heads, fanboys, so please don’t go all conspiracy theory on us.

Whatever, would-be buyers have to wait until H2 2013 for the device, Doh!’s report continues. At that point, the new device will result in “a large number of shipments” for the Cupertino company. ®
