Luminex rips virtual tape from data centres, shoves it in the cloud

Joins the buzzword party with cloudy storage biz Nirvanix

While EMC thinks the next move in storage is to rip the tape out of the mainframe and replace it with the virtual stuff, Luminex seems to be going one step further: by grabbing its virtual tape from the data centre and floating it up to the cloud.

Mainframe virtual tape library (VTL) vendor Luminex has buddied up with cloud storage supplier Nirvanix to offer Luminex CloudSAFE, virtual tape storage for mainframe users in the cloud, in Nirvanix' Cloud Storage Network to be exact. Nirvanix emphasises the enterprise scope and reliability aspects of its cloud storage. Once the VTL data is up in the cloud, users can access from anywhere rather than being tied to access to a specific data centre when VTLs are based on-premise.

Nirvanix says it can also provide consumption-based pricing instead of users having to purchase, install and manage their own VTL products. The CloudSAFE product/service can be used with Nirvanix's private, public or hybrid clouds.

We see here a continuance of Nirvanix's push to get data into its cloud through partner deals and Luminex jumping on the cloud storage bandwagon.

CloudSAFE will be available for mainframe customers in the fourth quarter of 2012 and supports the z/OS, z/VM, z/VSE, and S/390 operating systems. ®
