Super-boffin Stephen Hawking to star in Big Bang Theory

UK prof to drop in on Dr Sheldon Cooper

British boffinry supremo Stephen Hawking will guest star in US hit comedy show The Big Bang Theory next month.

The programme's maker CBS confirmed it had signed up the famed theoretical physicist, well known for writing bestseller A Brief History of Time. The broadcaster said Hawking, 70, will appear in an episode that airs stateside on 5 April.

The cosmologist will pay a visit to ubernerd Sheldon Cooper, described by CBS as Hawking's "most ardent admirer".

“When people would ask us who a ‘dream guest star’ for the show would be, we would always joke and say Stephen Hawking – knowing that it was a long shot of astronomical proportions,” the sitcom's executive producer Bill Prady gushed.

“In fact, we’re not exactly sure how we got him. It’s the kind of mystery that could only be understood by, say, a Stephen Hawking.”

This won't be the first time the scientist has popped up on a popular American telly show. Hawking previously guest-starred as himself in an episode of The Simpsons and appeared playing a poker game in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The wheelchair-bound prof was unable to attend his birthday bashes at the University of Cambridge and Blighty's Science Museum in January this year due to ill-health. ®
