AppSense pushes out Dropbox encryption app for iOS

Virtualisation software maker AppSense has moved into Apple kit with the release of its first iOS app ever – DataLocker – a security layer for Dropbox apps.

The free app takes the UK-based company into new territory, but the move is all part of the trend towards making the most effective use of virtual resources. Bolstering security on the iOS Dropbox apps should help companies to prevent employees' from leaking data by installing super-secure clouds on iPads and iPhones. DataLocker allows Dropbox users to encrypt their files locally and in the cloud.

Employees can leave their iPhones in the back of taxis all they want, but if sensitive work information is held behind the DataLocker encryption wall then it should be safe and can be remotely removed. iOS has become an increasingly important platform for enterprise security as many corporates and staff members move over to Apple's tablets and phones.

DataLocker is the first product from AppSense Labs, a new research arm of AppSense and is aimed both at CIOs negotiating the influx of employee devices into the workplace and the consumer market.

DataLocker links with Dropbox accounts to allow users to sync encrypted files across their devices. It works across Windows, Mac and iOS and has the ability to store the encrypted data on any local or cloud location. Dropbox itself does offer file encryption but was breached last year, DataLocker adds an extra layer of security for CIOs hesitant to put their content into the cloud. ®
