Amazon quietly gobbles up 'social shopping' tech

Will this pig-out actually fatten anything up?

Recent hires by Amazon show that etailer is toying with contextualised, social shopping.

In a talent buyout, Amazon have acquired four key employees of social shopping service Quorus in the past month, geekwire reports.

Quorus co-founder Logan Bowers was poached to become a senior software engineer at Amazon in November, since then second co-founder Michael Dougherty and employees Sam Rayachoti and Peter Abramson have joined Amazon too. The Quorus.com site has been taken offline which suggests that Amazon have bought out the "social shopping" technology.

Quorus offered shopping sites a social layer for comparing and discussing products. It built on existing networks like Facebook instead of creating new ones around each site. According to Geekwire one of the core products was Quorus Engage - a ”post-click marketing platform” that allowed retailers to “message their visitors with unique calls-to-action which personalize the site experience.”

It seems reasonable to expect to some of this filtering through to Amazon in the next few months ... ®
