Tesco: buy a DVD, get the download free

No such thing as a free launch

Buy a DVD or Blu-ray Disc from Tesco tomorrow, and it will give you free access to the downloadable version hosted by Tesco-owned online movie service Blinkbox.

The deal only applies to Clubcard holders, however. There's another catch: it only applies to certain films, 26 in the first batch.

The list of titles available tomorrow comprises Bad Teacher, Adventures of Chris Fable, Battleground, Space Dogs, Battle Recon, Snow Beast, Santa's Dog, A Christmas Wish, Bangkok Bound, Swamp Shark, Monster Wolf, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2, Jeremy Clarkson: Powered Up, John Bishop Sunshine Tour, Top Gear at the Movies, Celebrity Juice: Too Juicy for TV, Mark Watson Live 2011, George Harrison: Living in the Material World, Screwed, Set up, Strictly Dance School and Transformers 3.

Not an inspiring selection, and the other release dues later in the month won't improve it significantly: The Smurfs, Hangover 2, Final Destination 5 and Conan the Barbarian.

We're not sure why you'd want to own some of these - a few of 'em aren't bad - and certainly not own them twice over.

Since the downloads will be DRM'd, it's not as if the download copy saves you from having to rip the disc to enjoy a title on another platform.

Blinkbox is available on a range of LG and Samsung TVs, plus the PS3 and, through a browser, Macs and PCs. It's coming to the Xbox 360 and the iPad "soon", Blinkbox promised. ®
