Amazon set to build Aus data centre

Hiring staff but still quiet on plans

Amazon is ramping up its activity down under, confirming that it is investing in an Australian data centre via a job advertisement.

Speculation has been mounting since July over Amazon’s level of commitment to the Australian market, following a visit from Amazon VP and CTO Werner Vogels in July during the Amazon Web Services Cloud Tour.

“We are currently expanding our infrastructure management team and are looking for proven Data Center Operations Manager with experience in people management, strong technical understanding and the drive and vision to take Amazon Data Center Operations to the next level,” the advertisement states.

It adds that the company's infrastructure consists of various custom built and off-the-shelf applications operating on a variety of platforms including Linux systems, Oracle Databases, Cisco Networks, and other major technologies.

The position calls for a Sydney-based manager, suggesting that Sydney will merely be the first of many, with the recruitment ad stating that the manager will be reponsible for “one or more of Amazon's Data Centers.”

While Amazon has yet to officially confirm its plans for the Australian market it also hiring for a number of other Sydney and Canberra based positions including Account Manager, SI Partner Sales Manager , APAC SI Program Manager, Business Development Manager - ANZ Public Sector and Government (based in Canberra) and AWS Technical Account Manager. ®
