UK shamed in high-speed broadband study

Brits rank 15th, The Netherlands tops Euro list

The Netherlands have the fastest internet connections in Europe according to a State of the Internet report by Akamai, with more than 68 per cent of Dutch broadband lines clocking in at 5Mbit/s or more.

That compares to only 30 per cent of UK connections at least hitting this high-speed broadband mark, leaving the UK in 15th place in the list of 22 European countries with high-speed broadband connectivity. That's still a 70 per cent year-on-year rise for the UK, which is ranked 25th in the world for fast net access.

Even if UK broadband connections aren't the speediest, they do tend to be consistent, with 91 per cent of Brit broadband connections running at above 2Mbit/s, putting the UK 6th on the list of European countries with broadband above 2Mbit/s and 11th in the world. Across Europe, more than half of broadband connections were at speeds of 2Mbit/s or over.

The fastest internet in the world is found in Japan - with 59 Japanese cities filling out the Akamai list of the 100 cities with the fastest broadband. Brno in the Czech Republic has the fastest connection speeds of any city in Europe at an average of 8.3Mbit/s. No UK cities make the top 100.

Everywhere in Europe the speed of broadband is on the rise, with Switzerland, Ireland, Turkey and Spain posting increases in high-speed broadband adoption (5Mbit/s at least) of over 100 per cent.

Akamai, a content delivery network based in Massachusetts, surveyed internet speeds across the world between April and June this year.
