Nokia punts cheapo NFC dev kit

Pretend you love Symbian and score a cheap C7

Desperate to spur interest in Near Field Communications, Nokia is flogging an NFC development kit with a C7 and two dozen tags for €180, or about half the cost of a C7.

It's not for everyone: the company was keen to remind us that the offer is only open to members of the Nokia Developer Launchpad programme. Membership of that programme is free right now, though limited to companies, and we were told that signing up just to get a cheap C7 would be frowned upon: so you're not to do it.

Should you be genuinely interested in developing NFC applications, and doing so on a Symbian handset, then your €180 will get you 12 Type 1 tags, and 12 Type 2, along with a special offer on NFC kit from the ToP Tunniste store and the aforementioned C7.

The C7 runs Symbian Anna, which has the necessary extensions to create NFC apps, but the handset does not have the secure element needed for proximity payment apps (it also lacks SWP, which would enable a SIM-based secure element to be used).

But for the more-interesting-but-less-profitable family of NFC apps, the kit is ideal, and cheap to boot. But is it cheap enough to make one pretend to be interested in Symbian development? ®
