Zendesk adds Melbourne

Melbourne to get own BOFH-in-the-cloud

Cloud providers are continuing their game of “capture the flag” in Australia, with yet another international provider announcing a local outpost. This time, it’s Zendesk, which provides cloud-based helpdesk software.

The company already has Australian customers, including BBC acquisition Lonely Planet, online ad business REA Group, and across the Tasman, New Zealand Post.

Zendesk joins a growing march of international businesses in or around the cloud market creating local subsidiaries. These include Cloud Sherpas and the Digital Realty Trust. Accenture, Fujitsu, Telstra, Macquarie Telecom and others are all directing increasing resources to expanding cloud-based infrastructure and applications down under.

Victoria’s keen support for the IT sector is one attractor for companies like Zendesk; Melbourne is also arguably the capital city with the most-contested corporate fibre market, home to networks from both national and local carriers. This has long acted as an attractor to Internet businesses.

According to StartUpSmart, Zendesk’s launch party will include free one-year subscriptions to startups associated with various incubators around Australia.

The local operation of the Danish-launched Zendesk will be headed by Michael Hansen, and is expected to add 20 staff over the next 12 months. ®
