Unlikely contender tops rankings in Nokia ringtone quest

If possible, even more annoying than the original

Many of those entering the competition to create Nokia's next ringtone have pulled out all the stops, but the current front-runner has limited himself to the one marked Vox Humana.

Currently at the top of the popular vote, with 26,728 likes, The Great Marvellous is a rendition of Nokia's unmistakable ringtone which has to be heard to be believed. It certainly fits the criteria of being "fresh, expressive, original, creative yet distinctively a Nokia Tune", and is on track to enter the final.

Nokia must be pleased it has not made any commitment to using the most popular tune. In fact, the company has only promised that the five most-liked entries will get shortlisted along with five selected by a "professional jury". That panel will then reduce that number to five runners-up (who get $1,000) and one winner. The Great Marvellous is unlikely to make it that far.

To be fair there are other entries which one might prefer to emerge from one's pocket to announce an incoming call, but The Great Marvellous (entry 206, just in case it's slipped off the top) surely deserves some portion of the prize pot.

Some may argue that the performance is unduly influenced by Family Guy's Herbert - who did his own rendition of the Nokia ditty as a diversionary tactic - but we reckon The Great Marvellous is superior with its classic tones and compelling vibrato tail, though it's probably fair to say that Dom Joly's antics would have been less impressive to this soundtrack. ®
