Telstra adds Red Hat to cloud offering

Also signals local hosting of Office 365

Telstra has become a Red Hat Certified Cloud Provider, readying the carrier to offer the Linux specialist’s enterprise solutions as a guest operating system.

Australia’s incumbent telco has been ramping up its cloud offerings throughout 2011, devoting $AU800 million to the push. While the carrier has claimed 80 percent growth in cloud offerings, the bulk of its previous success has been in hosted IP telephony, with more than 100,000 services connected.

The latest agreement adds to its push into more computing-oriented applications, in line with agreements signed earlier this year with VMWare, Cisco and Accenture.

Telstra is the seventh member of Red Hat’s two-year-old CCP program. The carrier already offered hosted Red Hat services.

Telstra also offers Microsoft products under its cloud program, currently without local data storage. However, CTO Hugh Bradlow has reportedly told an Australian security conference that Telstra wishes to bring Australian data onshore.

According to ITWire, Bradlow believes offshore storage of Office 365 customer data is only an interim solution.

The location of cloud storage has become a differentiator for Australian customers this year, with providers such as Macquarie Telecom and Cloud Nine highlighting their local data centres as ensuring that customer data doesn’t become subject to offshore disclosure laws. ®
