Anonymous smites Orlando after charity arrests

Two fingers to Florida over homeless beef

Hacktivist group Anonymous has taken to the streets in the Disney World resort town of Orlando, central Florida as part of a protest against the arrests of people supplying food to the homeless.

The group also launched a denial of service attack against a local tourism website, orlandofloridaguide.com, as a reprisal for alleged police harassment against Food Not Bombs.

The combined protests represent something of a return to more traditional multi-dimensional operations, such as the anti-Scientology (Project Chanology) campaign that began the organisation more than three years ago. The group has become better known for denial of service attacks in support of Wikileaks and against repressive governments and the likes of Sony.

Anonymous said it planned to launch denial of service attacks against a separate Orlando-related website every day until the arrests cease as part of an action it has dubbed "Operation Orlando". The loose-knit collective is also running a 'Boycott Orlando' campaign, reportedly kicking off this effort by inserting a message to this effect onto the Universal Orlando Resort website.

The BBC reports that Food Not Bombs ran foul of city elders in Orlando after it began feeding homeless people in a downtown park. The group carried out its action without a permit, a bureaucratic oversight that has earned the group's president, Keith Mchenry, multiple arrests. Neither side appears to be about to back down.

Food Not Bombs said it has no affiliation to Anonymous. ®
