Deduper Sepaton edges out from data centre

ROBO DS3: Chunky unit

High-end deduper Sepaton has refreshed its edge deduplication array, giving it more capacity and performance.

The S2100-DS3 supersedes the DS2 and is a remote office/branch office system, positioned by Sepaton as a spoke to its data centre hub machines, the S2100-ES2, to which it can replicate data and so provide business continuity and disaster recovery services to the branch systems.

Like the ES2, the DS3 uses Sepaton's 64-bit v6 software, and has v6 features such as NetBackup OST support. The DS3 comes in a 2U rackmount enclosure with 12 disk drives, either 1 or 2TB ones, and provides up to 20TB of raw user capacity.

There are three variants: the 1000, 2000 and 200e. All have two 6-core Westmere processors, and two (1000) or four (2000) 4Gbit/s Fibre Channel ports plus, in the 2000e model, two 10GbitE ports.

There can be up to three expansion trays, taking capacity up to 40TB for the 1000 variant, and 80TB for the 2000 and 2000e models. Ingest speeds are up to 600MB/sec for the 1000, up to 1.2GB/sec for the 2000 and up to 1.5GB/se for the 2000e.

The DS3 includes DeltaStor deduplication, hardware compression and VTL emulation, but DeltaRemote replication, OST and secure erasure are optional. NetBackup OST AIR replication is planned to arrive by the end of the year.

Sepaton's EMEA VP, Tim Butchart, said Sepaton was focussed on selling the DS3 to its enterprise customers, but some of its channel partners may sell it as a stand-alone system for smaller businesses.

DS3 pricing starts around $110,000 for a system with 10TB of usable capacity and it is currently in beta test. ®
